Healthy Living Initiative
Why a Healthy Living Initiative?
GSUSA believes all girls are entitled to information and skill-building opportunities that will help them make positive health decisions. Girl Scouts, with nearly 100 years of experience, understands how to address complex physical and emotional issues related to girls’ health from kindergarten through the end of high school.

GSUSA created a Healthy Living Unit in 2006 and began offering Healthy Living training in 2007, following years of research including two reports by the Girl Scout Research Institute: Weighing in: Helping Girls Be Healthy Today, Healthy Tomorrow (2004) and The NEW NORMAL? What Girls Say About Healthy Living (2006).
GSUSA reported results in summer 2007 from the “Raise Your Voice For Girls” Survey, conducted by GSUSA and assisted by the Girl Scout Research Institute. Almost 7,000 Girl Scout leaders, adults, volunteers, parents, girls, and others selected the following 5 issues as most important in the lives of girls. Four out of the top five issues are related to healthy living:
GSUSA introduced 4 new healthy living fun patches in August 2007.
GSUSA includes the following four topics in the category of “healthy living:” (1) nutrition, (2) physical activity, (3) healthy relationships, (4) changing bodies.
Won't you join Susitna Council in taking the Healthy Living Pledge? E-mail tgryting@gsscak.org how many girls and adults in your troop took the pledge (we are tracking this info).
